WINTER
November brings the rainy season; local flowers tuck in and dream of spring while Valentine’s Day peeks around the corner. February 14 is generally an in between time, when early spring flowers start but are not abundant. However this year may change things up.
Velvety brown magnolia leaves, red-tipped nandina heavy with berries, a medley of abundant berries, evergreen sprigs, moss, bay laurel and geranium foliage all thrive in the rain. Locally grown protea and cymbidium orchids add exotic texture.
Forced bulbs — narcissus and amaryllis — are available. Roses from Southern California. Peonies, additional roses, hydrangeas and many other flowers arrive as imports. Early sightings of quince blossoms and helleborus this year. Dry arrangements that carry a memory of summer are a popular local option in winter.
