Autumn days of late September are sunny and nights are crisp. Summer flowers continue to bloom: colorful dahlias, fragrant garden roses, cosmos, chocolate sunflowers, zinnias, bachelor’s buttons, amaranth, honeysuckle, scented geraniums, gravenstein apples and grapes. The brilliant show of fall foliage begins with reddish tips that gradually shift from orange to yellow as the sap recedes: liquid amber, oak and pistache have especially beautiful leaves. This time of year is wistful. The coolness in the night air signals the time to say goodbye to these very special blooms.
